The Parish Church

The parish church of Our Lady of the Assumption is the village’s most architecturally significant building. It was constructed in the 18th century on the site of an earlier 16th-century church whose bell tower and presbytery, with its star-shaped Gothic vault, are still preserved.

In 1729 the procedures began to demolish that original church and build the new one, which was commissioned to Manuel de Lara Churriguera.

The original design, by Manuel de Lara Churriguera, underwent several modifications before it became – more than one hundred years later – the structure we see today: a simple yet monumental building in a Neoclassical-like style featuring large stone columns and arches supporting brick vaults. Inside, visitors will find remarkable altarpieces, religious statues, and a beautiful polychrome granite pulpit.
