The Village Square

Music: Atairaos.

The square is the heart of the village, the place where everyday life unfolds and where La Alberca’s most important festivals and celebrations take place.

In this square, visitors will find the former hospital for pilgrims and the poor, the palace of the Dukes of Alba—now converted into a theatre—the corral concejo (once used as animal pens during festivities involving bulls), the old village school, the town hall, and even the former jail. The appearance of the square changed throughout the 20th century: arcades were added, the fountain (Fuente Grande) disappeared, and the original railing that once protected passersby from falling into the fountain was replaced with a beautiful stone cross (crucero).
